Vicar Jeremy Rathbone (ジェレミー・ラスボーン, Jeremī Rasubōn) is the pastor at a church on the Phantomhive estate.
Character Outline[]
History[]
When Vincent Phantomhive took his sons, Ciel and "Ciel", out to teach them about the duties of an earl, he, i.a., brought them to the church to talk to Vicar Rathbone. Jeremy thanked Vincent for his visit and then proceeded to tell him about the wish of the local hospital to employ more nurses and their financial concerns regarding this, and that Sam, a shepherd, wished Vincent to name his granddaughter who would be born in a month. Vincent suggested to throw a charity ball for the hospital and told Jeremy that he was never good at naming and that Rachel was the one who had named their twin sons. Jeremy remarked that the name of Vincent's son is rather rare in England, and Vincent replied that their relatives were not fond of their decision as well, but that the time when traditional English names will be "tedious" might come eventually.
Then, Jeremy remembered something and changed the topic to talk about this year's Saint Michael's Festival.[1]
Trivia[]
- Jeremy Rathbone's name is based on the Sherlock Holmes' actors Jeremy Brett and Basil Rathbone.[2][3]
- "Jeremy" is the Medieval English version of "Jeremiah"[4] which comes from the Hebrew name יִרְמְיָהוּ (Yirmiyahu, "YAHWEH will exalt"). It is composed of the roots רוּם (rum, "to exalt") and יָה (yah, refers to the Hebrew God).[5]
- "Rathbone" is likely a habitational name that comes from Radbourn in Warwickshire or Radbourne in Derbyshire. "Radbourn(e)" is derived from the Old English reeds (a collective singular) and burna ("stream").[6]
