Blue Revenge Arc[]
In December 1889, when Doll leads Finnian and Snake to the stables, Susan struggles to make Ginny take her riding class. After the horse dropped her at a previous session and she hurt her foot, Ginny has been adamantly refusing to take her lesson. Doll comes to Susan's aid but is also unsuccessful. Then, Theodore steps in and effortlessly helps Ginny bond with the horse and help her overcome her fear of riding. Doll and Susan thank him for helping and apologize for bothering him. Theodore retorts that this is simply the duty he has to fulfill as the orphanage's "oldest brother."[1]
Later, Doll asks Susan to take Snake and Finnian to the Collie class while she rests for a while at the stables; Susan complies. After Doll has left,[2] Snake wonders if she is all right. Susan then pulls him aside and whispers to him that "girls have their own business" before she playfully asks what his relationship with Doll is. Snake replies her that they used to work together.
Susan then brings Snake and Finnian to the Collie class where the students have to prepare a light meal today. She tells them to wait and watch until Doll returns.[3] During their stay, a Mastiff student, Artie, drags a Collie, Daniel, back to class; Daniel sneaked out because he refuses to do "women's" work. Seeing this, Susan sighs and wonders whether Daniel really had the aptitude for Collie class; he only complains and talks about wanting to reach "fledging day" soon after all.[4]
Shortly afterward, the chief arrives and whispers a message to Susan who then announces to everyone present that tomorrow will be Ginny's "fledging day."[5] When the Collies change plans to sew Ginny's "fledging garment," Susan asks Finnian and Snake to help out in the kitchen with preparations.[6]
That evening, during Ginny's banquet, Mabel tearfully hugs Ginny. Susan eventually comes to separate them so that the festivities can start.[7] The next day, Susan attends Ginny's "fledging ceremony." When Snake and Finnian are surprised to see Ginny getting her hair cut and shorn, Susan explains to them that it is done so that she will not bring fleas and lice to her new family. After the ceremony, Ginny says goodbye to everyone and is taken away by carriage.[8]
At night, Susan, the chief, and another maid go to the secret facility beneath the orphanage's stable to see whether the "packing" is done. The chief tells her to clean the fledging garment, and after Susan grabs it, she remarks how unexpected Ginny's "fledging" was before she asks who will be next. The chief replies that it will be Theodore[9] and then proceeds to express her disappointment that the recent candidates do not have high "aptitudes." This prompts the other maid to inquire if it is even necessary to make everything "match." The chief explains that the orphanage is conducting a clinical trial in which the students are raised to approximate the "star lords" to see whether their "radiance" will become more appropriate for them as a result.
Susan then interrupts the conversation by pressing the fledging garment into the other maid's hands and saying that the details do not matter anyway as all that matters is their high salary. Afterward, the chief orders Susan to bring "Canopus' radiance" out, and Susan grabs a few bottles of Canopus blood. She notes that things are taking longer than before, and the chief agrees and says that they hastened Ginny's "fledging" for this reason.[10]
Susan and the chief leave to attend to Doll. However, they are discovered by Finnian, Snake, and the elder students in the middle of the blood transfusion.[11] The chief explains that Doll is only being treated for her "illness" but Theodore replies they know that she is lying and that Doll is Canopus. A moment later, the chief spots the jars with organs in the students' hands. Realizing that what they are trying to do, the chief sees no other option but to kill them all. She takes out a gun and shoots at Theodore, though Finnian can push him aside at the last moment. He throws a few of the organ jars at Susan and the chief and tells the elder students to run.
Just when they have left the room, Doll jumps over them and blocks their way. She then tries to persuade Snake to join her by telling him the truth about the circus members' "disappearance."[12][13]
In the meantime, Susan and the chief recover and join them in the corridor, with guns in their hands. The chief urges the students, Finnian, and Snake to surrender. Theodore feints compliance but then quickly instructs and helps Mabel to attack the chief. Mabel can knock her out with a kick, and when Susan tries to shoot Mabel, Oliver appears behind her. Holding a knife against her back, he orders her to drop the gun, and she readily complies.
Shortly afterward, Doll rushes forward to kill Mabel. To her horror, Snake throws himself between them, and Doll ends up slicing open his throat with a glass shard.[14] Doll drops the shard and scrambles to stop the blood flow, in vain. The chief uses this opportunity to grab Mabel. She is about to shoot her, but Artie is quicker; with Susan's gun, he shoots her in the head. He then orders Oliver to kill Susan. When Oliver hesitates, Susan pleads for her life, offering to lead them out of the secret facility. To her misfortune, Artie does not hear her out and shoots her. Right after her body hits the ground, he searches her and retrieves the knives she kept hidden in her hair and sleeves.[15]
