Countess Rachel Dalles-Phantomhive (レイチェル・ファントムハイヴ, Reicheru Fantomuhaivu) is the late wife of Vincent Phantomhive and mother of "Ciel" and Ciel Phantomhive.

Character Outline

As described by Angelina Dalles, Rachel is a gentle, kind, patient, and beautiful woman who never put on airs.[2] She has long strawberry blonde hair and deep blue eyes.

Rachel cares greatly about her family, as she always works to cheer Angelina up and include her in the family. She also has a bit of a playful personality, as she once complimented Angelina on her chest size while grabbing her breasts.[3] Rachel can also be quite strict with her family as she sometimes spanks her sons.[4][5]

She has asthma and is part of the reason Angelina worked to become a doctor, as Angelina states that she would like to cure her respiratory condition.[3] She has a lot of admirable qualities and was fortunate in marrying a man she loved and having twin sons with him.[6]

Rachel was Angelina Dalles' older sister and met Vincent Phantomhive around the same time Angelina did. She fell in love with Vincent, and they married a few years later in 1874.[7] In 1875, Rachel became pregnant and on a very snowy December 14, she gave birth to "Ciel" and Ciel Phantomhive. Angelina assisted her during the birth.[8][9][10]

Due to her asthma, Rachel was not able to run around and play with Ciel and Elizabeth Midford much, although she took joy in watching Angelina play with them.[11][12]

Her asthma also inhibited family outings. At one such occasion, Vincent and "Ciel", with Diedrich's assistance, even cooked for Rachel to help her get better.[13] It did work so well that they could go on a boat ride the day after—however, without Ciel who had still not recovered.[14][15] To cheer him up, Rachel, Vincent, and "Ciel" gathered flowers on their trip.[16]

A day after Ciel entrusted to "Ciel" that he wished to open a toy store in London in the future, "Ciel" threw a tantrum and refused to get up and go to his lessons as he did not want to be separated from his brother by becoming Earl. Rachel comforted him and borrowed Vincent's blue Phantomhive ring to show "Ciel". Then, she and Vincent told "Ciel" that he and Ciel would always be brothers even if they went to live in different places and have different occupations and that "Ciel" would be able to assist Ciel with his dream when he was Earl.[17]

When Angelina lost her husband and child after a horse carriage accident, Rachel frequently visited her at the hospital and tried to cheer her up. She acknowledged the gravity of Angelina's loss and wept for her. When she heard that Angelina would be out of the hospital soon, she insisted that Angelina would come to Phantomhive Manor for the twins' birthday party in celebration of her recovery.[18]

However, on Ciel and "Ciel"'s tenth birthday, Rachel and Vincent were killed and left in the burning estate.[19][20]

  • (To Angelina Dalles) "An is lovely and smart. You should have more confidence in yourself."[3]
  • (To Angelina Dalles) "We must celebrate, then! I know! My son[s] will be celebrating [their] tenth birthday soon. Why don't we celebrate your recovery together then too!? Don't worry! The correct way to celebrate a recovery is to drink and be merry with lots of people!!"[21]

  • Rachel named her sons and gave them rather unusual names, much to the chagrin of Vincent's relatives.[22]
