Blue Revenge Arc[]
In December 1889, Susan brings Finnian and Snake to Collie class to watch them prepare a light meal consisting of pound cake and marmalade. Oliver is the first to peel a basketful of oranges. When the teacher starts heaping compliments on him, Oliver excuses himself and hurries to boil his peels.[3] Then, a Mastiff student, Artie, drags back a Collie, Daniel, who escaped from the classroom as he refuses to do "woman's" work. Artie scolds him for his outdated, entitled views and tells Oliver to take better care of his "siblings" as he is the oldest Collie student. Oliver apologizes, and when Daniel starts talking about wanting to reach his "fledging day" quickly, Oliver hugs him and promises the staff to speak to him and raise his aptitude properly. Glancing at Artie, Oliver adds that he has to change and do better so that he will not cause trouble after his "fledging day."[4]
Later, the chief arrives and whispers something to Susan who then announces to everyone present that tomorrow will be Ginny's "fledging day." While the other students are ecstatic, Oliver is shocked and forgets to pay attention to his pot with the boiling orange peels. Artie warns him about it, but Oliver still reaches for the pot and hurts himself.[5]
Afterward, the Collies' schedule is changed from preparing a light meal to sewing Ginny's "fledging garment." Artie whispers something to Oliver.[6] In the evening, Oliver attends Ginny's celebratory dinner,[7] and, at night, Oliver, Mabel, Artie, and Theodore ambush Finnian when he leaves his room. Mabel, hanging from a ceiling lamp, restrains and silences Finnian with a cloth, and Oliver holds a knife against his throat. Theodore tells Finnian to come with them if he values his life.[8] Mabel then loses her grip, and she, Oliver, and Finnian fall to the ground. While Mabel tells Theodore that she could not help it because Finnian is so heavy, Oliver swiftly ties up Finnian without anyone noticing.
Oliver reminds the other elder students that the night watch will arrive soon, and they bring Finnian to a larder where they question him. When they realize that Finnian does not know what is going on at the orphanage, they argue among themselves what to do; Oliver starts crying during the argument for which Artie scolds him. Finnian interrupts them and reveals that he and Snake infiltrated the orphanage because their master believes the institution might be connected to an organization that collects blood.[9] Oliver and Mabel are quick to believe him, but Artie is adamant that Finnian is lying. Theodore is skeptical, but does not dismiss the possibility that he is saying the truth. He and Artie also inform Finnian about the orphanage's tight security and that escapees are quickly caught and immediately reach their "fledging day."
Theodore ultimately decides to help Finnian for as long as he helps them, but warns him that they will turn him in if he acts suspiciously. Telling Finnian to meet them in the larder again tomorrow at midnight, the elder students leave.
The next day, Ginny's "fledging day" ceremony is held; her hair is cut off and she receives her "fledging garment." Afterward, Oliver, with the other elder students, tearfully watches Ginny getting taken away by a carriage.[10] The chief then announces that the students will now start the lessons for the day as the ceremony is over.[11]
At night, Oliver, along with Artie, Theodore, and Mabel, waits for Finnian in the larder. When he arrives, he and the others lead him to the stable where they watch a carriage arrive. The driver carries an unconscious Ginny into the stable, and Theodore explains Finnian that this happens to every "fledged" child: They are secretly returned to the orphanage and brought to the stable where they "vanish." After the driver has left, they go into the stable and search it for a hidden door but cannot find anything. Just after Oliver suggests they should leave, someone catches them and asks what they are doing.[12]
