Nick is a student at F.O.L. Orphanage and part of its Pomeranian Class.

In December 1889, while Doll shows around Finnian and Snake, Nick approaches Doll and asks her to fly kites together. She declines, reminding him that Pomeranians can only fly kites twice a week and today is reserved for playing board games and reading. Nick becomes upset as he cannot go outside and play as freely as the students of other classes because of his "aptitude."
Doll tells him to study hard before she leaves with Snake and Finnian. Nick does not go to his classroom though; instead, he wistfully stares out of a window.[2]
Later that day, Nick attends the dinner party to celebrate Ginny reaching her "fledging day." He congratulates Ginny and says he envies her.[3] The next day, Nick is present at Ginny's "fledging day" ceremony.[4]
