Overview

Nicholas is a patient at the Athena Sanatorium.

Character Outline[]

Nicholas is a bald elderly man with a shaggy white beard.

Nicholas is a friendly individual; he was the first to strike up a conversation with Baldroy, the new patient,[2] and he assured Baldroy that he will recover.[3] He is not attentive to the passage of time, for he asked Baldroy if he served in the wars in India and Crimea, despite those wars happening thirty years ago when Baldroy was a child.[4]

Plot[]

Blue Revenge Arc[]

At the Athena Sanatorium, Nicholas identifies Baldroy's current bed as Ethan's former bed, and asks Baldroy if he served in the wars in India and Crimea. Conny informs him that those wars happened thirty years ago. When Baldroy reveals that he lost his mind in war, which caused his wife and son to leave him, Nicholas laments that he lost what is most precious to him. He then assures Baldroy that he will recover.[5] Later, he sleeps.[6]

The next morning, Ada wakes up the patients, and has them gather in the courtyard. Once they are gathered, Ada constrains them to perform "healthy, vigorous calisthenics," which are a series of exercises. Nicholas performs them with zest.[7]

While bleeding out and experiencing a dreamlike state, Baldroy visualizes the ground crumbling and phantoms of Nicholas, Ada, Lau, and Conny seizing his foot in an attempt to drag him down into the chasm.[8]

Ch190 Nicholas

Nicholas scolds Baldroy.

While waking up in the blood-drawing room, Baldroy mistakes Nicholas for God, which Nicholas berates him for. Once Baldroy realizes that he is surrounded by his fellow patients, Ada explains that he was about to die, as he was bleeding profusely from an arterial injury; Nicholas, Conny, Lau, and the other patients volunteered to provide him with their blood.[9]

Ada admits that, with that technology, they can, indeed, save more patients, but the sanitorium must be shut down immediately. The announcement raises a furor among Nicholas and the other patients. Ada shouts that she cannot abandon patients who still require care, and considers remaining there until she can secure facilities. Baldroy cuts in, telling Ada that their enemies will send someone new to kill her next time, and advises that she go into hiding.[10]

Lau interjects, suggesting that Ada and the patients relocate to Shanghai, where he has authority and thus can guarantee their safety. Ada tearfully thanks him, and the patients look on with joy.[11]
