Jane ( ジェーン, Jēn) is a former security guard and maid-for-hire of Heathfield Manor.

Appearance

Jane is a young woman with blue eyes and blonde, slightly curly hair, which she has pinned up and partially hidden beneath a cap. She usually wears the uniform every maid at Heathfield Manor has to wear: a simple dark blue dress and an apron with frills. Unlike the other maids, Jane also wears a bowtie and keeps guns hidden in her apron.

Personality

Jane is a cynical, dispassionate individual motivated solely by monetary gain. She possesses sharp instincts, for she discerned that Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao were no ordinary maids. Moreover, she is well-aware of when to cut her losses, such as when she surrendered upon realizing that she could not defeat or bribe Mey-Rin. She believes that all women are "savage beasts."

Jane is an agile, talented fighter and markswoman. She is roughly equivalent to Mey-Rin, a trained assassin, in skill, as demonstrated when they were locked in a standoff.

History

Chris Heathfield hired Jane on the basis of her killing skills and paid her extraordinarily well for her to pose as a maid and guard Heathfield Manor so that no one could learn of the blood-collecting operation in the basement; her job, which had hitherto been easy, was complicated by Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao. Upon arrival to the manor, Jane, accompanied by Abbie, saw that several maids were already having their blood drawn in the basement, the reason to which she is not privy to. Moreover, she witnessed Abbie, every now and then, escorting a group wearing blood hoods to the basement late at night; along with the house steward, Abbie smuggled the collected blood out the manor by concealing them in tradespeople's goods.

Plot

Blue Revenge Arc

Jane speaks to Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao.

When in late 1889, Heathfield Manor welcomes two new maids–Mey and Ran–Mrs. Abbie charges Jane with guiding them to their rooms and instructing them.

Sometime later, Jane polishes the banisters with Mey and instructs her to start from the bottom while she begins at the top. On her way up, Jane turns around and notices that Mey is using shoe polish and stops her. She gives her the correct polish abrasive and asks her whether she made the mistake due to her bad eyesight, but Mey tells her that she simply reached for the wrong polish. Jane then points out that, as glasses are rather expensive, maids can rarely afford them, and Mey says that her previous employer gifted them to her. Jane notes that he must have been a generous man despite everything and resumes their work.

One morning, there is a commotion among the maids, and when Mey asks for its reason, Jane informs her that Baron Heathfield has returned from parliament last night and that everyone will have to line up to greet him–newcomers even have to stand at the front of the line. They then go to greet the Baron.

Afterward, the maids excitedly talk about Chris and marvel over his good lucks. Jane reminds them that noblemen only fall in love with maids in romance novels, but one of the maids replies that this is possible in Heathfield Manor as Chris once invited a maid–"his favorite"–to his bedroom every night until she surprisingly quit. Jane adds that Chris most likely grew tired of her and that she subsequently returned home.

Later that day, Annie goes to Chris' bedroom after receiving an invitation, and Mey follows her, but Jane who is patrolling the manor finds her in front of the bedroom and catches her. Silently, Jane guides Mey to the kitchen where she reminds her of the curfew and tells her about Chris' wish to find a replacement for his deceased wife who resembles her not only in appearance, but in voice, personality, body, compatibility, and shape of soul too. Jane then sends Mey back to her room.

On the night Ran-Mao is summoned to Chris's room, Jane follows her. When Ran-Mao beats up Chris to extract information on the missing maids, Jane shoots a tranquilizer dart at her neck, thereby subduing her. Jane says that she did warn Chris about Ran-Mao and Mey-Rin and calls all women "savage beasts." After advising that Chris stay hidden to recover, Jane drags Ran-Mao down into the secret basement and injects sedatives to keep her asleep while her blood is drawn.

The morning after, Jane enters Mey and Ran's room. Seeing Mey still in her nightgown, Jane asks why she is not wearing her uniform, as they have planned to polish the chandelier this morning. Mey tells her that Ran has not returned to their room last night, and Jane assures her that everything is fine, but adds that she may not see Ran for a few days, as she has seemingly become Chris's new favorite. Then, they go to polish the chandelier. Later that day, Jane catches Mey behaving suspiciously as she "mistakenly" goes the wrong way to the laundry room.

That night, Jane watches over the secret basement, where the maids who have "left" the manor are kept in a comatose state, when Mey breaks into it. Jane shoots at her, and they fight for a while until they cease fire for a moment to talk; however, they keep their guns directed at each other. Jane tells Mey that she knew that she was not an ordinary maid and that she had fighting experience—and having seen her fight just now, Jane makes Mey a proposition: If she joins her, she will get thrice as much as what her current employer pays her. Mey considers the offer.

When Mey agrees that Jane's offer is a good deal and admits that working for her current master is challenging, Jane is pleased. However, Mey then interrupts Jane, saying that, no matter the pay, she would never work for a master who deceives and exploits women.

Since Mey-Rin refuses to defect to her side, Jane swings her axe at Ran-Mao. However, Ran-Mao dodges the attack by leaping up from her bed. Then, she binds Jane in a chokehold and informs Mey-Rin that Jane had put her to sleep. Jane asks how Ran-Mao is awake despite the sedatives. Ran-Mao replies that opium is more "potent," and therefore the sedatives pale in comparison.

Jane quits.

Jane breaks free from Ran-Mao’s chokehold by flipping her. Afterward, Jane surrenders, saying that it is unwise for her to continue fighting Mey-Rin, who, unlike her, is not mercenary, and that she will have Chris relieve her of her duties.

Jane points.

Ran-Mao insists that they kill Jane, but Mey-Rin disagrees. Jane, on the condition that they let her go, apprises them of what she knows: She has been hired and paid well by Chris to guard Heathfield Manor so that no one would be aware of the blood-collecting operation in the basement; every now and then, Abbie would escort a group wearing black hoods to the basement; the collected blood would be smuggled out of the manor.

To Jane's and Mey-Rin's surprise, Ran-Mao is already in the midst of dismantling the blood-collecting operation in the basement. After Annie and the other maids wake up, Jane tells them to head upstairs, and they comply, chiefly due to their fear of Ran-Mao, who has laid waste to the basement.

Jane holds a gun to Mrs. Abbie's neck.

Jane follows the maids upstairs, where said maids inform the other maids of the situation, which compels them to call Scotland Yard. When Abbie attempts to dissuade them from such, Jane threatens her with a gun, telling her that Chris's search for an ideal bride has now ended. While Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao detain the house steward, Abbie labels Jane a traitor. The latter retorts that she was never told not to betray her employer.

With Scotland Yard soon arriving, Jane, Mey-Rin, and Ran-Mao depart from the manor. Mey-Rin offers to refer Jane for a position, considering that the latter is now unemployed, but Jane declines. As she removes her maid pinafore apron, she declares that she will go somewhere where there are no "troublesome coworkers."
