Doll (ドール, Dōru) is a first-string member of the Noah's Ark Circus. She is its tightrope walker, and specializes in aerial ballet.[10] She is considered "the princess" of the Circus with a "death-defying tightrope walk."[11] Doll sometimes adopts the alias Freckles,[12] a second-string member.

Appearance

V7 Doll

Doll in her performing outfit.

Doll is a young female with brown hair, blue eyes, and freckles dotting across her nose. When not performing, she dresses in baggy clothes, which includes a lightweight jacket with two undershirts, brown trousers, and brown ankle boots. The forelocks of her neck-length hair are arranged so that they conceal her ruined left eye. The eye, though badly scarred and disfigured, is still capable of shedding tears.[8]

When performing, Doll dons a white wig, which appears to be made of white roses, with two feathers sticking out the left side and beads dangling from the side, that ties under her chin in a large white bow; it is worn to veil her left eye. There is a design of thorny tendrils painted on her left cheek, that reaches down from her covered left eye. Doll also sports fake white eyelashes, an off-white neckband trimmed in white lace, an off-white strapless dress trimmed with a striped bow and more white roses, off-white sleeves with a poof cap that extends from her shoulder to just below her elbow.

Her footwear consists of off-white ballet-style shoes with a white rose on each over the toes, a thigh-high, black-and-white striped stocking on her right leg, and a similar white stocking on her left; the stockings are held up with lace garters and straps. She sometimes carries a white, fringe-trimmed parasol, which she uses in her performance as a tightrope walker, and occasionally wears light lipstick.

Personality

When adopting the persona as a first-string member of the Noah's Ark Circus, Doll appears solemn and taciturn in expression and manner.[13] However, when disguised as Freckles, Doll is cordial, welcoming, and somehow innocent, befriending Ciel Phantomhive shortly after they were named tent mates.[14][15] She seems to judge it a necessity to look after him, waking him up when he oversleeps,[16] sharing her food when he does not get enough,[17] and teaching him how to be a better performer.[18] Her eagerness to make and be surrounded by new friends is supported by the fact that she often adopts the aforementioned alias because she dislikes sleeping alone and staying with someone else "makes her sleep better sometimes."[19] She is relatively naive, though, and is gullible enough to believe the lies Ciel tells her — she easily forgave Ciel when he claimed he was stealing items[20] — something that the other circus performers reprimanded her for multiple times.[21]

Doll is not modest, as shown when she attempted to get Ciel to take a bath and offered to wash his back for him.[22] She even allowed him to touch her chest — in fact, she had unflinchingly laid his hand there—to prove that she is female, and gave him permission to "take a peek downstairs."[23]

Furthermore, Doll is exceedingly loyal to the other first-string circus performers, and was devastated upon hearing news of Joker's death.[24] She views all of them as family; she calls the other first-string members her brothers and sisters, and Kelvin her "Father."

History

Ch35 Doll's eye

Her missing eye is revealed.

Doll grew up in an alley in the East End, referred to as a gutter, with the other first-string circus members, minus Snake. Joker stated that they came together because they were each defective in a way. In Doll's case, her left eye is burned and marred, because her parents raised her too harshly and consequently deformed her.[25] As thieves, they were unsuccessful, and they barely managed to survive.

Ten years ago, Doll rushed up to Joker one day with a tooth in her hand. She gleefully exclaimed that it fell out, believing that she would later get a coin from the Tooth Fairy and promised them that she would buy them all bread afterwards.[26] Unbeknownst to her, Joker, Beast, Dagger, Peter, Wendy and Jumbo worked on manual chores earnestly all night long in order to earn a single coin for her. The next morning, an oblivious Doll showed off her coin to them, stating how happy she was that they could eat bread with it. However, in the belief that the Tooth Fairy would give her more coins, Doll later attempted to take out more teeth that weren't wobbly, to the dismay of the others.[27]

One day, Kelvin found them in the alley and allowed them to come to live at his estate, where they lived in relative luxury. Sometime thereafter, they decide to create a circus. Joker gave them all stage names, including Doll, who initially tried to refuse the name, because she believed it does not fit her. Joker dismissed her complaint, saying that of course, it did because she is their "cute little sister."[28] Her birth name is unknown.

Circus Arc

302 Doll performs

Doll, along with the other members of the Noah's Ark Circus, parades the streets of London, in order to uplift the spirits of people and garner attention for their circus troupe.[29]

Ch27 Freckles feeds Ciel

Freckles shares "his" breakfast with Ciel.

At a circus show that Ciel Phantomhive and Sebastian Michaelis attend, Joker introduces Doll as their tightrope walker. Later, after both Ciel and Sebastian have successfully infiltrated the circus, she is assigned to be Ciel's tent mate as Freckles. She views it as her job to help Ciel out, which she does by waking him when he oversleeps,[16] sharing her food with him when he does not get enough for breakfast,[17] and trying to assist him in improving his coordination for the circus act.[18] After practice, she opts that they go take a bath. There, she forcibly lifts his shirt and discovers his slave mark, before he runs away.[30]

Later, Doll finds Ciel sneaking through the first-string tent, but saves him from being detected by Dagger and Snake. She reveals that she is actually Freckles, and when questioned about her gender, she puts his hand on her chest and offers for him to "take a peek downstairs," which he declines. Ciel claims that he was only planning to steal before he was caught red-handed, as it is a survival habit derived from living in East End, and begs her not to boot him from the camp. Doll forgives him but admonishes him to not do it again. She states that they are now even, as she has done something terrible to him earlier, referring to when she accidentally saw his slave mark.[31] When Ciel was afflicted with an asthma attack, Doll sleeps next to him on a bed.[32]

Later, after the first-string members realized that Ciel and Sebastian have trespassed their tent then mysteriously left, Doll is physically and verbally reprimanded by Peter for being deceived by Ciel. She asserts that he is merely a child and that they made a promise. Nonetheless, she is distressed that they are unhappy with her, thinking it is her fault that the circus may be in trouble. She is then assigned the task to ride to Kelvin's manor, to inform Joker of the first-string members' intended plan.[33] While on the ride, she sticks by her trust in Ciel, reiterating to herself that she does not believe he is part of the Scotland Yard.[34]

Ch35 Doll attacking

Doll attacks Ciel and Sebastian.

Eventually, Doll arrives at Kelvin Manor just in time to see it on fire and Ciel and Sebastian leaving the building. She approaches Ciel, deeming that they are still friends, and asks him what is going on. When he slapped her and ordered her not to touch him, she is upset and demands if everything was a lie. Ciel affirms it so, and he and Sebastian deliver the news that their purpose was to eradicate the circus and that they have killed Baron Kelvin and Joker. Shocked, she collapses to the ground in tears and proclaims that she will not forgive them. She draws a knife and attacks them. Ciel calls Sebastian's name, and Sebastian kills her, under Ciel's command.[35]

Blue Revenge Arc

Later that year, when Snake and Finnian are sent to F.O.L. Orphanage for a mission, Doll—now, alive again—finds one of Snake's snakes, Wordsworth, on the premises; she promptly catches him.[36] Because she recognizes the snake, she goes to look for Snake and eventually finds him inside the orphanage. She returns Wordsworth to him and reminds him not to let his snakes roam around freely.

When Snake has recovered from the initial shock of finding her here, he jumps to embrace Doll. They are glad to see each other again, and Snake explains to a confused Finnian that Doll, like him, was a member of Noah's Ark Circus. Finnian and Doll then introduce themselves to each other, and she remarks that, coincidentally, "Finnian" was also the name of a newcomer at their circus.[37]

Then, a maids tells Doll that Snake and Finnian cannot stay as they do not have the right "aptitude." Doll pleads for them to be allowed to stay as menial workers, even offering to share her room if there is no space left. The maids reluctantly allow it. Afterward, Doll shows Finnian and Doll around the building and explains the school's system to them.

When they are at the classroom for the Pomeranians, Nick asks Doll if she wants to fly kites together. She reminds him that he has already flown kites twice this week, which is the maxmimum for Pomeranians, and encourages him to stay inside instead. Doll, Snake, and Finnian then leave Nick behind and head to a small kitchen where Doll makes tea and, upon Snake's request, tells them what happened the night Joker and the others vanished: She was sent to Kelvin Manor[38] but when she arrived, the building was already on fire and she could not save anyone. After losing Kelvin and her family in the same night, Doll returned to the circus which had to close not long afterward because it could not survive without the first-string members. She then wandered through London and Bath and eventually ended up at F.O.L. Orphanage where she is doing menial work and looks after the children which is something she can do well.

When Doll finishes her tale, she asks Snake where he went. Snake is about to answer when his snakes stop him. They are then interrupted by noise coming from the kitchen: The afternoon tea menu for the Pomeranians has been changed from lemon drizzle cake to lemon tart which is sending the staff into panicked hurry. Snake cannot understand why they are making such a fuss as both desserts are lemon-flavored after all. His words make everyone stop in shock, and Doll tells him that they may be friends but she cannot overlook what he said as "this" is "everything" about this orphanage.[39] Snake apologizes for accidentally saying something that upset her and the maids; Doll accepts the apology and immediately proposes to continue the tour.

Doll guides Snake and Finnian upstairs before she brings them to the stables. There, a Corgi student Ginny refuses to take her riding lessons because of her fear of horses. Doll unsuccessfully tries to persuade Ginny take her lesson. Then, Pomeranian Theodore arrives and swiftly solves the problem by rebuilding Ginny's trust in horses and reminding her that horses can sense the feelings of their riders; as long as she is gentle with them, they will be gentle with her too. Ginny and Theodore leave for their respective classes afterward.

Doll suggests to visit the Collies next, only to collapse mid-sentence. Snake reaches out to her, but Doll tells him to stay away from her and that she simply got dizzy from the sun. She asks a nearby maid, Susan, to take Finnian and Snake to Collie class instead. When they have left, Doll, her veins dark and starkly visible, goes to hide in the stables. She is frustrated that this has happened now and says that she wants everyone to wait while she sends everyone to "your hell."[40]

The next night, Doll receives a blood transfusion in the orphanage's secret underground facility when Snake, Finnian, Theodore, Mabel, Artie, and Oliver find her.[41] The chief tries to tell them that Doll is only being treated for an illness, but Theodore calls out her lie and points out Doll as "Canopus," one of the "stars." The chief then shoots at Theodore; before the bullet hits him, Finnian pushes him away and orders him and the other elder students to flee. Doll cannot allow them to leave though and jumps over them and blocks their way.

When Snake asks Doll if she is truly one of the "stars," Doll apologizes for lying to him and reveals that the Phantomhives killed her, Kelvin, and the other first-string circus members. Emphasizing that the Phantomhives are liars and murderers, Doll suggests to Snake to take revenge on them together.[42] Snake then asks Finnian if he really killed Jumbo. Finnian does not only verify Doll's words, but he also informs Snake that the circus members were kidnapping children and allowing them to be maltreated; the night he killed Jumbo, he and others invaded Phantomhive Manor to try to murder Ciel. All the new knowledge overwhelms Snake and he does not know who to trust and side with.

Meanwhile, the chief and Susan join them in the passageway and attack the students, though they are quickly bested by them. When Theodore boasts that they, the students, were victorious against the teachers because of the "aptitude" they "reared so carefully," Doll scoffs. Saying that they are only "imitations" that can "never surpass the real thing," she lunges to slit Mabel's throat—but Snake rushes to save her, and Doll cuts Snake's throat instead.

With his last strength, Snake insists that Doll would never do "something like that" before he collapses, bleeding heavily.[43] Doll immediately drops her glass shard and hurries to Snake. She tries to stop the bleeding by pressing her hands on the wound, in vain. Snake can only wheeze weakly and cry silently in pain as his blood seeps out of him.

With everyone distracted, the chief tries to get rid of Mabel and the others, but Artie swiftly shoots and kills the chief and Susan. Not long afterward, the elder students hear footsteps, likely from approaching staff members. They decide to flee, and while Finnian contemplates killing Doll and getting Snake, Theodore makes him understand that he has no time and that at least one of them has to make it out. Finnian then decides to leave Snake behind with Doll and escapes with the elder students.[44] Doll can do nothing but cradle Snake in her arms and cry over him until he passes away.[45][46]

Trivia

Out of Universe

  • Yana Toboso likes girls with very short hair. If it had not been for Doll's scars, she would have given her such a hairstyle.[50]
  • Toboso's arm would always go numb when she drew Doll's circus costume. If she had designed it at a later point, she would have created a "better," fluffier costume.[51]
  • She thinks that Doll and Ciel could have gotten along well "but their respective worlds never ever cross."[52]

  • Doll is portrayed by Ginga Shitara in Noah's Ark Circus. Originally, Matsui Tsukito was supposed to play her; however, due to vocal difficulties, he was replaced by Shitara.[53]
