Daniel is an orphan at F.O.L. Orphanage and part of its Collie Class, much to his annoyance.[2]

In November 1889, when Finnian and Snake are visiting Collie class, Daniel is dragged back to the classroom by Artie, a Mastiff. Daniel sneaked out of class because he refuses to do "woman's" work. He does not think he needs to learn how to sew and cook as he plans to marry a woman who will do all this "burdensome" work for him after leaving the orphanage. Artie scolds him for his outdated, entitled views that are despised at F.O.L. Orphanage. He also tells another Collie student, Oliver, to take better care of his "siblings" as he is the oldest Collie. Oliver apologizes, and when Daniel starts talking about wanting to reach his "fledging day" quickly, Oliver hugs him and promises the staff to speak to him and raise his aptitude properly.[3]
Later, the chief arrives with the message that tomorrow will be Ginny's "fledging day." Daniel and most other students except Oliver and Artie are ecstatic upon hearing the news.[4]
