The Blue Revenge Arc is the eleventh arc of the Kuroshitsuji manga.

Synopsis[]

"Ciel Phantomhive", with Undertaker's assistance, reclaims the title of Earl Phantomhive.

Ciel Phantomhive, branded a criminal, is forced to go into hiding alongside Sebastian Michaelis, Baldroy, Finnian, Mey-Rin, and Snake, with Lau and Ran-Mao offering their support.

The group divides into pairs to investigate and dismantle four separate blood-collection facilities in order to defeat "Ciel" and Undertaker.

Plot[]

Manor in North Yorkshire[]

Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao get employed as maids by Chris Heathfield for an undercover mission and start working at Heathfield Manor.[1] Their task is to find out whether Heathfield Manor is connected to the Aurora Society and the blood collections; if the speculation were true, they would have to dismantle and eliminate the entire organization.[2]

Not long after Mey-Rin's and Ran-Mao's employment, Chris returns from parliament and greets his staff, particularly the newly hired maids, Ran-Mao, Mey-Rin, Annie, and Miranda. This is unusual for the lord of a manor; Chris does this to survey the maids and invite one of them to come to his bedroom at night by slipping a note into their cuffs.[3]

When Mey-Rin spies on the recently-invited Annie, she is caught[4] by Jane who tells her that Chris lost his wife and daughter in a carriage accident a few years ago. Since then, he has been looking for a replacement for his wife; this replacement must be similar his late in appearance, voice, personality, body, compatibility, and shape of soul. The next day, the maids gossip that Annie left the manor, and when they are assembled again, Chris picks Ran-Mao as the invitee. By the next morning, Ran-Mao has still not returned from that meeting.[5]

Although Jane assures Mey-Rin that Ran-Mao is fine and will likely stay with Chris for a few days,[6] Mey-Rin still worries for Ran-Mao. At the first opportunity, Mey-Rin infiltrates Chris' room and discovers a hidden passageway to a secret basement. There, she finds Ran-Mao and the maids that "left" the manor. Before Mey-Rin can free them, she is attacked by Jane. Impressed by Mey-Rin's skills, Jane tries to headhunt her.[7] When Mey-Rin refuses, Jane attacks Ran-Mao. Because of her regular opium consumption,[8] Ran-Mao could not be properly sedated though and was woken up by the gunshots; she quickly retrains Jane before she can injure her.[9] Ran-Mao reveals that, the night she went to Chris, she tried to punch the whereabouts of the missing maids out of him[10] but was stopped and put to sleep by Jane.[11]

Subsequently, Jane surrenders; she is only a security guard and maid-for-hire and has no desire to lose her life fighting against Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao for the pay she gets. Jane informs them about the blood collection business: Abbie and the head butler have been supervising it, and people in black hooded cloaks would bring away the crates with the blood bottles. Afterward, Ran-Mao singlehandedly destroys the machinery in the basement, and the sleeping maids are woken up who run upstairs upon seeing the rampage.

The resulting commotion wakes up the rest of the household. Ran-Mao and Mey-Rin secure the head butler while Jane catches Abbie. And the furious maids attack Chris. With the mission wrapped up, Mey-Rin, Ran-Mao, and Jane leave and bid one another goodbye.[12]

Sanatorium in Wiltshire[]

Ch170 Lau and Baldroy in disguise

Baldroy and Lau in disguise.

Baldroy and Lau infiltrate the Athena Sanatorium with the false identities of Matthew Burgh, the second son of an aristocrat who returned home after being wounded in battle, and Burgh's private physician who has been hired to care for him, for he, traumatized from battle, is emotionally unstable, respectively. Their documents and identity papers have been forged, as well.[13]

After Lau introduces "Burgh" and himself, a nurse leads them into a private room before stating that the chief nurse will be there momentarily. Lau is eager to meet the so-called "Miracle Healer," and Baldroy remarks on how all nurses are angels to military personnel.[14]

The door bursts open, and a team of individuals in gas masks storms in.[15] Baldroy and Lau prepare to engage in combat with the team.[16] However, the team, much to their surprise, hoses them down in bleach, strips off their clothes, and proceeds to disinfect, sterilize, sanitize, and dress them in patient gowns.[17]

Ch171 Ada

Ada.

One of the members is revealed to be Ada, the chief nurse, who states that pathogens are not allowed in the sanatorium and therefore Baldroy and Lau must be cleansed. Lau asks if she is the so-called "Miracle Healer." While donning a mask, she avers that the patients in the sanatorium are able to recover due to treatment involving rigorous hygiene control, which is not a miracle. The other members concur with her point, declaring that they ensure bacteria does not get into the sanatorium. Ada adds that such is the "core" of the sanatorium.[18]

Ch171 Ronald

Ronald Knox.

Ronald Knox enters, inquiring if Ada has finished her "elaborate disinfection event." He introduces himself as Doctor Knox and says that he will be in charge of Burgh.[19]

Ronald tells Baldroy that they should work together on his recovery and questions who Lau is. Lau introduces himself as Chang, the private physician for the Burgh family, and explains that he has been using Eastern medicine to treat Baldroy. Ada orders Lau to leave, since he is an outside physician, and Lau excuses himself.[20]

Ch172 Lau comforts Baldroy

Lau comforts Baldroy.

Lau's departure prompts Baldroy to feign a breakdown, reminded the time his troop was attacked by Apache Tribe. Lau hugs and comforts Baldroy, assuring him that he is not alone. Ronald defers to Ada on what to do, given Baldroy's serious condition. Ada agrees to Lau staying with Baldroy, even though such a stay is against the rules, stating that it is important for both Baldroy’s body and heart to be cleansed for his recuperation. In response, Ronald attempts to flirt with Ada, who sprays him. Ada informs Lau that he has permission to stay with Baldroy and adds that she will escort them to their ward. In private, Lau thanks Baldroy for his "great acting," claiming that he has had no countermeasure prepared when he left the room, to Baldroy’s exasperation.[21]

Ada and Ronald escort Baldroy and Lau to their ward. Baldroy notes the cleanliness of the area, commenting that there are no rats or flies. Ada reveals that the sanatorium was built according to Florence Nightingale's innovative design, and Baldroy recognizes her as "the Angel of the Crimea"; Nightingale is renowned for improving the hygienic environment of hospitals and elevating the status of nurses during the Crimean War.[22] Ada declares that none of Nightingale's accomplishments can be attributed to a "miracle"; rather, her ingenuity as a nurse, statistician, sanitarian, and architect allowed her to save patients. Ronald avers that anyone staying in the sanatorium can return to society, even if they have been told that they will die soon.[23]

Ch172 Layla

Layla.

Layla reports to Ada and introduces herself to Baldroy, who thinks to himself that she appears to be about the same age as Ciel. Layla, noticing that Lau has been observing her, asks if something is wrong, to which he says no.[24]

At night, Baldroy muses on the situation and his distrust of Lau, who is renting a room in the staff dormitory. Nicholas, a fellow patient, identifies Baldroy's current bed as Ethan's former bed, and asks Baldroy if he served in the wars in India and Crimea, despite those wars happening thirty years ago. When Baldroy states that he went to Sudan in North Africa, Conny, another fellow patient, says that he, too, served there, and lost his leg as a result. Baldroy discloses to Conny that he lost his mind; he was so traumatized by the war that his wife and son gave up on him and left. Nicholas and Conny assure Baldroy that, with Ada there, he will heal like Ethan did.[25]

Ch173 Ada blocks Baldroy

Ada blocks Baldroy.

Later, while the other patients are sleeping, Baldroy attempts to sneak out to explore the facilities, but Ada, who is making night rounds to check on patients, intercepts him. Baldroy claims that he needs to use the restroom, and Ada elects to accompany him. With his plan foiled, Baldroy returns to bed.[26]

Ch173 Baldroy and Lau exercise

Baldroy and Lau exercise.

The next morning, Ada wakes up the patients, and has them gather in the courtyard. Once Baldroy, Lau, and the others are gathered, Ada constrains them to perform "healthy, vigorous calisthenics," which are a series of exercises. After the session, Ada tells Baldroy that she will show him around the facilities after his meal, and Lau volunteers to tag along. Baldroy and Lau conclude that the tour will be a golden opportunity to search for a blood-collecting facility.[27]

Ch173 Layla taunts

Layla taunts a patient.

After the meal, Ada and Ronald lead Baldroy and Lau to the rehabilitation room, where wounded soldiers undergo functional training. Layla, seated on the back of a patient, is taunting said patient in order to motivate him. She then greets Baldroy sunnily and offers to train him, to his dismay. Ronald explains that Layla forces patients to train to the limit, albeit harshly, and Lau comments that she is "playing a different script."[28]

Next, Ada and Ronald lead Baldroy and Lau to the operation theatre, where patients who received inappropriate treatment undergo a second operation with the latest technology. Baldroy thinks to himself that they are possibly draining blood from patients in there.[29]

Afterward, Ada and Ronald lead Baldroy and Lau outside toward a cylindrical building. They enter the building and ascend the stairs. Ada reveals that the last facility is the blood-drawing room.[30]

Baldroy is shocked at the revelation. Ada states that the blood drawn from patients in the blood-drawing room is sent to a "certain research institution" for the sake of contributing to advancement in medicine; said institution fully funds the sanatorium, which receives more support than other sanatoriums due to their provision of specimens. She argues that the sanatorium cannot sustain itself on the traditional operating model of solely relying on donations; they require the institution's funds in order to serve their patients properly and with adequate nursing care, so that their patients can be guided back to society. At Ada's outburst, Ronald flips through his book containing the soul retrieval list.[31]

Ch174 Ada thanks Conny

Ada thanks Conny.

Ada says that they only draw blood from young, strong patients who have consented to such. Conny announces to Ada that his blood has been drawn, and Ada removes his tubing and thanks him for his cooperation in providing a half pint of blood. Conny offers to have his blood drawn every day rather than on a monthly basis, but Ada emphatically declines the offer, to their collective surprise. She explains that lack of blood leads to poor health and urges Conny to rest. Conny responds that he will never be sick there, and she asserts that she will not allow him to fall ill. Other patients announce that their blood has been drawn, and she instructs them to rest.[32]

Ch174 Ada bows to Baldroy

Ada bows to Baldroy.

After the patients leave, Ada tells Baldroy that she will not force him to donate his blood, especially given that his family has already donated to the sanatorium upon his admission. She then bows as she requests that he cooperate, should his condition improve and he is strong enough. Baldroy says that he will think about it.[33]

Ch174 Lau challenges Baldroy

Lau challenges Baldroy.

Baldroy and Lau convene outside. Lau comments that it is anticlimactic of the sanatorium to reveal the blood-drawing room so early, as he wanted to relax there longer, away from the city. He then asks Baldroy how he would like for them to kill the people there and gives suggestions, much to Baldroy's dismay. At Baldroy's hesitation, Lau counters that the blood-collection facility harms the interests of Ciel Phantomhive and challenges him to take action.[34]

Baldroy says that he understands that his duty is to annihilate any blood-collection facilities, but he disagrees with killing everyone indiscriminately, as some are not aware that they are being taken advantage of. He affirms that he will accomplish his mission, but he requires more time to think of how he will do so. Lau cautions him against wasting time, and he reminds Lau that he wanted to relax more. Lau yields and grants Baldroy a couple of days.[35]

At night, Baldroy equips himself with a gun, sneaks out of the ward, and confronts Ada, who has been expecting him and who knows that he is not the real Matthew Burgh, for he once screamed that the war was in America, not Africa where Burgh was supposedly stationed. She asks him why he has come to the sanatorium, and he deduces that she must have a guilty conscience for showing him the blood-drawing room despite being suspicious of him.[36]

Ch175 Ada's past

Ada in the past.

Baldroy explains that he is under orders from "a certain gentleman" to investigate a secret organization collecting blood, which is associated with Sphere Music Hall. He asks her how she can put her patients at risk, and she denies as such, saying that she will protect the lives of the former servicemen, as well as their dignity, by providing their blood. She states that she cannot condone patients being kept alive in horrid conditions, as "dignity is as important as life," and discloses that she served as a nurse in the Sudan campaign, where she witnessed "hell" and was not able to let the troops die in peace. She further states that she "shamelessly survived" and returned to her country, and that the only way she can atone for her sins is through nursing.[37]

Ch175 Baldroy is pensive

Baldroy is pensive.

Ch175 Flashback - Sebastian

Flashback: Sebastian offers a cup of tea to Baldroy.

Ch184 Baldroy

Baldroy acknowledges Ada.

Ch184 Ada

Ada is touched by Baldroy's words.

Ch184 Ronald

Ronald listens in on Baldroy and Ada's conversation.

Baldroy confesses that he, too, "shamelessly survived." He then recalls an incident years ago in a cave, where he was surrounded by the corpses of his fellow soldiers. Starving, he was about to cut into a soldier’s arm to eat it, but Sebastian Michaelis entered the cave and prepared a picnic. Sebastian then offered a cup of tea to Baldroy.[38]

Eventually, Baldroy finishes recounting his history to Ada; he tells her that, while they both lost what was precious to them and survived, they are different, because he was driven to kill others, while she was driven to save others. She is touched by his statement that she is truly the "Miracle Healer." Outside the room, Ronald listens in on their conversation.[39]

Ronald flips through his book containing the soul retrieval list and checks his watch.[40]

Ada recounts her own history to Baldroy. Recently, those funding the sanatorium have drastically increased the amount of blood required. Ada has objected to such, as her patients’ health would be at risk with that amount, but they threatened to stop funding the sanatorium if she did not provide the blood.[41]

Ch185 Ada promises

Ada makes a promise to Baldroy.

Ada laments the fact that she is being pressured into inflicting harm on her patients, which, to her, is out of the question, but also that she is unable to save them without the funds; thus, she is in a quandary, where she does not know which is the best choice to make. Baldroy points a gun at her, saying that he was given the command to thoroughly mantle any blood-collecting operations. He asserts that, if Ada continues to collect blood, he will be forced to kill her and drive out her patients, but, if she stops collecting blood now, he will be her ally, much to her surprise. He assures her that there is nothing wrong with her dreams and efforts, which are vindicated by the joy of his fellow patients, and asks her to promise to adhere to her principles and never deliver blood to Aurora Society again. Ada promises him as such, and he puts away his gun. When she says that the next blood collection takes place tomorrow, he tells her that he will handle it and that she should keep working as usual for now.[42]

Ch185 Baldroy is attacked

Baldroy is attacked.

Ch185 Lau

Lau tells Baldroy he is disappointed in him.

Afterward, Baldroy dashes out of the room, thinking to himself that he does not have the liberty to wait for Ciel's instructions and that he must find a way to stall. While running, he suddenly finds himself pinned against a wall, narrowly spared from being pierced. The wielder of a blade, which is now pressed against Baldroy, is Lau, who states that he is disappointed in Baldroy's answer to his question regarding how to deal with Athena Sanatorium.[43]

Ch186 Lau taunts Baldroy

Lau taunts Baldroy.

Ch186 Lau attacks

Lau attacks Baldroy.

Ch186 Lau attacks again

Lau attacks an unseen target.

When Baldroy points out that Lau said he would give him more time, the latter counters that waiting would compromise his interests. After explaining that Ada is forced to collect blood for essential funds, Baldroy asserts that he does not want to kill anyone, and that he is certain Ciel would not, either. Lau silences Baldroy by slamming his blade into the wall. He dismisses Baldroy's opinion, as well as Baldroy himself as an "incompetent servant," given that he appears unable to execute Ciel’s commands. He argues that Baldroy's foolishness is further burdening Ciel, who is already burdened after being stripped of his status as the earl. Lau then threatens to dispose of Baldroy.[44]

Ch186 Ronald

Ronald talks to Lau after being attacked.

Nevertheless, Lau stops himself before piercing Baldroy's eye. Baldroy concludes that Lau, the top official of Qing Bang, is not "stupid" enough to kill a Phantomhive pawn. Lau retracts and twirls his blade, acknowledging Baldroy for having a "brain" and commenting that he had thought Baldroy was a fool beyond saving for being swayed by his emotions. While remarking that such is still not enough, he hurls his blade at an unseen target.[45]

The blade strikes Ronald's book, prompting Ronald to demand the reason for Lau's attack. Lau apologizes, claiming that he had assumed a rat was scurrying about and tainting the facility. While returning the blade, Ronald asks why Baldroy and Lau are loitering there at that hour. Baldroy avers that he was seeking Lau’s company because he could not sleep. Ronald says that Ada will scold them if she catches them, and Lau assures him that they will return to bed. After Ronald walks off, Lau tells Baldroy that he has been warned.[46]

Ch186 Ada and Layla

Ada supervises Layla.

Ch186 Baldroy watches

Baldroy watches a wagon leave.

The next day, Ada directs Layla and the other staff members to unload a wagon and transfer the goods to the warehouse. When the wagoner requests the "payment," Ada shows him crates of blood, much to his approval. As the wagoner heads off with the crates, Baldroy watches from afar with his gun equipped.[47]

While watching the crates of blood get wheeled away, Ada recalls how, last night, she was at the facility where they stored the blood. She was worried about the fact that the collected blood was lacking in quantity, as well as the possibility of endangering her life and the lives of her patients.[48]

Ch187 Baldroy talks to Ada

Baldroy talks to Ada about his plan.

Baldroy barged into the building, requesting a hand. He had secured two pigs from a farmer in the neighborhood, so that they could use the pigs' blood in lieu of human blood to buy time. Ada expressed her concern with the prospective blood transfusion, and Baldroy assured her that the blood would never reach its client.[49]

At Layla's call, Ada snaps out of her recollection. When Layla asks if Ada is feeling well, Ada claims that she is fine before setting off to supervise her patients' calisthenics, while Layla looks on.[50]

Ch187 Hooded men

Baldroy spies on the hooded men.

Baldroy continues observing the wagoner, who is stopped by a black wagon belonging to two hooded men. The wagoner presents the blood and prepares to transfer the crates to the black wagon, but a hooded man decides to examine the blood by pouring it into a teacup filled with a certain liquid.[51]

Shortly afterward, the hooded man cries out that the blood is fake and tosses the teacup. The two hooded men, equipping their guns, describe Ada as a "dwarf star" who must be turned into a "meteor" for defying them again, as per the order of "that gentleman." As they speak to their driver, the black wagon jolts: Their driver has been slain, and the horses have been attacked.[52]

Ch187 Baldroy in action

Baldroy eliminates his enemies.

Ch187 Layla stabs Baldroy

Layla stabs Baldroy.

Ch188 Layla bites Baldroy

Layla bites Baldroy.

Ch188 Layla

Layla plans to exterminate everyone.

Soon after, the two hooded men fall to the ground, dead, while the wagoner is grazed by a bullet. Baldroy walks over, stating that he is used to jungle warfare and musing that the hooded men discovered the fake blood faster than he had expected.[53]

Just as Baldroy is about to return to the sanatorium, he is stabbed from behind by Layla, who says that she is punishing him, a "naughty swine," for leaving the sanatorium without permission.[54]

Delighted, Layla licks Baldroy's blood off her knife, relishing the smell of her food. She bites into Baldroy's back and slurps his blood before withdrawing and commenting that, according to Undertaker, ingesting from the mouth is "meaningless." She adds that she left the sanatorium to search for food and came across Baldroy, a rat that had "sneaked into the larder." She deduces that Baldroy must be associated with Ciel, considering that he knew about the blood ingestion.[55]

Ultimately, Layla dismisses the thought and expresses that she is glad she has finished off Baldroy, who "corrupted" Ada, their "mock-nightingale." After deciding to exterminate everyone, she heads off, while Baldroy struggles to retain his consciousness.[56]

Ch188 Layla ambushes Lau

Layla ambushes Lau.

Ch188 Lau defends himself from Layla

Lau defends himself from Layla.

Ch188 Baldroy shoots Layla

Baldroy shoots Layla.

In the meantime, Lau is reading a book in his room. When Layla ambushes him, he intercepts the attack with his blades and reveals that he sensed Layla was no ordinary nurse on the day they met. Layla pretends to be hurt before attacking Lau. After tasting Lau's blood, she determines that he is her food, too.[57]

Just then, Baldroy shoots Layla through the heart from behind. When Layla questions how he is still alive, he replies that he was once known as the "invincible private soldier." He turns the question back on her, and she cries about her blood spilling. Given that Layla is moving despite the bullet penetrating her heart, Lau muses that she must be what Ciel called "the reanimated corpse," or Bizarre Doll, much to his dismay. Baldroy asserts that he must kill her for Ciel's sake.[58]

Layla screams for "Al" to help her and escapes through the window. Lau and Baldroy are about to give chase on a horse, but then Baldroy collapses. Meanwhile, Layla is frustrated that Al did not rescue her. As she runs through the forest, she says that she will inform "Ciel Phantomhive".[59]

Ch188 Lau props up Baldroy

Lau props up Baldroy.

Ada, having heard the gunshot, rushes to where Lau and Baldroy are. Lau, who is supporting Baldroy, discloses that Baldroy was stabbed deeply in the back and has lost plenty of blood. Ada checks Baldroy's condition and realizes that, should they do nothing, he will soon die from blood loss. She tells Lau that they must take Baldroy to the operating theatre.[60]

Ch188 Baldroy is wounded

Baldroy is wounded.

Baldroy, in a haze, cannot make sense of his surroundings. He extends his hand, requesting that they report to Ciel that the sanatorium will never again deliver blood to the enemy. He laments that, in the end, he was unable to collect his wages and asks Ciel for a leave from work.[61]

Ch189 Baldroy in a wheat field

Baldroy is in a wheat field.

In his dreamlike state, Baldroy visualizes being in a field of wheat as a farmer. His son, Baldroy Jr., approaches him with his slingshot. Shortly afterward, he returns home to both Baldroy Jr. and his wife, Joanna, who asks him why he is dressed in a chef outfit and carrying kitchen tools.[62]

Ch189 Baldroy and his family

Baldroy reunites with his family.

Baldroy explains that he is now working as a chef at Phantomhive Manor for Ciel, much to Joanna's astonishment, for Baldroy had not set foot in the kitchen since they got married. Having initially struggled with peeling potatoes, Baldroy expresses his admiration for Joanna's cooking skills. He also expresses his appreciation for working alongside the other Phantomhive servants, despite their ineptitude, and admits that it is not "a bad place to work," which pleases Joanna. Baldroy adds that he can make fried eggs now, to Baldroy Jr.'s delight, and promises his son that he will make all the fried eggs that he wants.[63]

Ch189 Sebastian stands in front of Baldroy

Sebastian stands in front of Baldroy.

Sebastian appears behind Baldroy and admonishes him for lying: Most of the eggs Baldroy prepares come out burnt. Before Baldroy can properly react, the ground crumbles, and phantoms of Ada, Lau, Conny, and Nicholas seize his foot in an attempt to drag him down into the chasm.[64]

Baldroy calls out for Joanna and Baldroy Jr., but Sebastian interposes himself between them. Sebastian suggests that Baldroy train some more before serving his dishes to his family. Baldroy grabs Sebastian's foot for purchase, but Sebastian pulls away, resulting in Baldroy falling down the chasm.[65]

Ch190 Baldroy wakes up

Baldroy wakes up in the blood-drawing room.

Ch190 Nicholas

Nicholas scolds Baldroy.

Baldroy, sensing something warm and fluffy, envisions that he is in heaven. He wakes up to Nicholas, whom he momentarily mistakes for God, yelling at him that he is not God. Startled, Baldroy finds himself in the blood-drawing room, surrounded by his fellow patients.[66]

Ch190 Lau greets Baldroy

Lau greets Baldroy.

Ch190 Ada

Ada discusses Baldroy's condition.

Lau, who is similarly hooked up to a blood-drawing machine, teases Baldroy for being so "shameless" as to presume he would ascend into heaven after killing people in wars, and welcomes him back to hell. Ada approaches Baldroy, explaining that he was about to die, as he was bleeding profusely from an arterial injury; Lau, Nicholas, Conny, and the other patients volunteered to provide him with their blood. Lau reveals that his blood is Canopus, the same as Baldroy’s blood, and comments that, despite the differences in their respective cultures, their blood is the same.[67]

Ch190 Ada the Miracle Healer

Ada as the Miracle Healer.

Baldroy is amused by the fact that he has survived yet again, and Conny whispers that, as he has said before, Baldroy will certainly recover because Ada, the Miracle Healer, is there. While laughing, Baldroy thinks to himself that the technology of Ciel’s enemies has saved him, ironically enough. Meanwhile, Conny and Nicholas rejoice, delighted to have assisted Baldroy.[68]

Ada admits that, with that technology, they can, indeed, save more patients, but the sanitorium must be shut down immediately. The announcement raises a furor among the patients. Ada shouts that she cannot abandon patients who still require care, and considers remaining there until she can secure facilities. Baldroy cuts in, telling Ada that their enemies will send someone new to kill her next time, and advises that she go into hiding.[69]

Ch190 Lau and the dragon

Lau discusses the future of the sanatorium.

Lau interjects, suggesting that Ada and the patients relocate to Shanghai, where he has authority and thus can guarantee their safety. He confesses that he had doubts about the "Miracle Healer" and the "technology of immortality," but, when Baldroy risked his life for someone else, he was able to witness the "miracle" for himself. He adds that he was moved and that his homeland will surely welcome them, as this is a "dragon's egg." Secretly, Lau muses about the new technology, its operators, and its subjects, which are "easy to handle"; he is convinced that, if he can make them his, the elders will reward him handsomely.[70]

Lau carries on, averring that the enemy organization is unlikely to pursue them all the way to Shanghai; Ada will not be killed; the patients need not be banished to the streets; and he will receive credit, so it is a win-win scenario. He remarks that it was wise of him to rescue Ciel and visit the remote countryside, after all.[71]

Ch190 Ada weeps

Ada weeps.

Ada grabs Lau's hands, expresses her gratitude, and weeps. The patients look on with joy. Baldroy, pleased with the outcome, says to himself that he will learn how to bake a pie by the time he reunites with Joanna and Baldroy Jr., and asks them to wait for him a little longer.[72]

Ch190 Ronald and Layla

Ronald helps Layla up.

While dashing through the forest, Layla trips over a rock and falls to the ground. She tearfully states that Al has promised her that he would not leave her alone. Ronald helps her up, apologizes for having kept her waiting, and declares that he has found her.[73]

Orphanage in Norfolk[]

Snake and Finnian head to F.O.L. Orphanage for their undercover mission. After inquiring whether they could receive shelter and food, the two women who opened the door for them agree to let them in for now. They also allow them to take the "test" as an advanced class student was recently fostered out; if Finnian and Snake show the right "aptitude," they may be welcomed into the "family."[74]

Finnian and Snake take the blood test first, and when the results show they do not have the right "aptitude," their written test is interrupted and they are asked to leave. Snake and Finnian protest, and Snake asks the maids to allow them to stay as menial workers at least; still, they are refused. Then, Doll arrives[75] and she advocates for them to remain. The maids eventually agree, and Doll shows Snake and Finnian around the orphanage and explains its class system to them.[76]

Afterward, they head to a small kitchen where, upon Snake's request, Doll tells them what happened the night the other circus members "disappeared."[77] They then hear a commotion in the kitchen and go to find out what its cause is: The maids tell them that the Pomeranians' afternoon tea menu was unexpectedly changed which threw everyone into a panic. When Snake points out that the change from lemon drizzle cake to lemon tart is not very dramatic as both desserts are lemon-flavored, the kitchen goes quiet in shock, and Doll becomes angry with him as "this" is "everything" about the orphanage.[78]

After Snake apologizes, they continue their tour. At the stables, they encounter Theodore, a Pomeranian student, and watch him effortlessly help Ginny, a Corgi, to bond with a horse and get over her fear of riding. When Doll proposes to visit the Collie class next, she collapses and sends Finnian and Snake away with a maid, Susan. Doll then hides in the stables, frustrated that her Bizarre Doll body weakened at an inconvenient time.[79]

At the Collie class, Finnian and Snake are surprised to learn that most students are boys as they learn work usually reserved for maids. After a Mastiff student, Artie, returns a wayward Collie, Daniel, to class, the chief arrives with the message that tomorrow will be Ginny's "fledging day." While most students and the staff members are ecstatic, Artie and a Collie, Oliver, are shocked and appalled.[80]

That evening, everyone celebrates Ginny's "fledging day" tomorrow in the dining hall. Theodore explains the custom of gifting departing students a mistletoe to Snake and Finnian; while it is a sweet gesture due to the symbolizing, Finnian points out that mistletoes are parasitic plants that can even kill their host trees. Afterward, everyone heads to bed, but Finnian, overwhelmed with the situation because of Doll's presence at the orphanage, cannot sleep. He decides to send Ciel Phantomhive and Sebastian Michaelis a telegram like Sebastian taught him. However, as soon as Finnian slips out of his room to go to the closest town, he is ambushed by Mabel, Oliver, Artie, and Theodore who tell him to follow them.[81]

The four students bring Finnian to a larder where they question him. When they realize that Finnian does not know what is going on at the orphanage, they argue among themselves what to do. Finnian interrupts them and reveals that he and Snake infiltrated the orphanage because their master believes the institution might be connected to an organization that collects blood.[82] Mabel and Oliver are quick to believe him, but Artie is adamant that Finnian is lying. Theodore is skeptical, but does not dismiss the possibility that he is saying the truth. He and Artie also inform Finnian about the orphanage's tight security and that escapees are quickly caught and immediately reach their "fledging day."

Theodore ultimately decides to help Finnian for as long as he helps them, but warns him that they will turn him in if he acts suspiciously. Telling Finnian to meet them in the larder again tomorrow at midnight, the elder students leave.

The next day, Ginny's "fledging day" ceremony is held. To Snake and Finnian's shock, her hair is cut off before she receives her "fledging garment." Afterward, Ginny is taken away by a carriage.[83] With the ceremony now over, the staff cleans up the decorations—and Finnian absentmindedly rips out a tree in the process—while the students start their lessons.

At night, Finnian meets up with Theodore, Artie, Mabel, and Oliver in the larder as they agreed. The elder students lead him to the stables where they see a carriage arrive. The driver carries an unconscious Ginny to the stable, and Theodore informs Finnian that this is what truly happens to "fledged" children: They are secretly returned to the orphanage and brought to the stable where they "vanish." After the driver has left, Finnian and the others search the stable for a hidden door. They are still searching when someone catches them and asks what they are doing.[84]
