The blue Phantomhive ring is a one-of-a-kind heirloom of the Phantomhive family. It has been handed down to each head of the Phantomhive family for generations.[3]

Overview[]

The ring is an ornate silver piece that holds an emerald-cut deep-blue sapphire. Left and right to the gem stone, the band takes the shape of the Phantomhive family crest; the rest of it is ordinary.[4] On the inside of the ring, the family motto—"Potentia regere"—is engraved.[5]

There is a fracture on the back of the blue gem stone.[6]

History[]

When "Ciel Phantomhive" refused to study one day because he did not want to be separated from his twin brother once they were grown up, Rachel took the ring from Vincent and gave it to "Ciel". She explained to him that this ring can only be worn by the Earl of Phantomhive. Thus, only Vincent had the right to wear it, but "Ciel" as the eldest son and heir would eventually obtain this right when he succeeded his father. This was something only "Ciel" could do. Vincent remarked that "Ciel" could help Ciel with his dream of becoming a toy maker when he was earl, and "Ciel" accepted that he had no choice but to become the Earl of Phantomhive.[7]

On December 14, 1885, Phantomhive Manor was attacked. In the chaos, "Ciel" took the blue ring from his father's corpse. After he and Ciel had been kidnapped by human traffickers, "Ciel" showed his brother that he had saved the ring and that it would help them return to the manor where they would start over together. To make sure that no one would be able to take the ring from him, "Ciel" then swallowed it.[8]

After "Ciel"'s death on the hands of the cultists, Ciel attempted to retrieve the blue ring from "Ciel"'s abdomen in vain. Then, the demon with whom Ciel had just stricken a deal, Sebastian Michaelis, took it out and handed it to Ciel, the new Earl of Phantomhive.[9]

Plot[]

Black Butler Arc[]

In 1888, when Ciel Phantomhive refuses to exchange the blue ring for another one Elizabeth Midford picked for him, she takes the ring from him and makes fun of it. This infuriates Ciel, and when he yells at her to give it back to him, Elizabeth throws the ring to the ground, shattering it.[10]

Afterward, Ciel throws the destroyed ring out of a window.[11] Sebastian Michaelis later gathers the pieces and restores the blue ring.[12]

Trivia[]

  • Because the ring is too big for his ring finger, Ciel wears it on his left thumb instead.[5]
  • Ciel once stated that the ring has seen his grandfather's demise.[13] However, his grandmother used to be the Watchdog—a position which is usually held by the family head—before Vincent.[14] It is, thus, unclear who was in possession of the blue ring before Vincent.
