Ch170 Athena Sanatorium

Athena Sanatorium.

The Athena Sanatorium for Former Servicemen in Wiltshire is a sanatorium that provides medical care and treatment to former soldiers who have been wounded in combat.

The sanatorium in Wiltshire is facing imminent closure.[1] On Lau's recommendation, the operations, staff members, and patients will relocate to Shanghai, where they will fall under his protection.[2]

Overview[]

With the assistance of Ada, the chief nurse often referred to as the "Miracle Healer," former soldiers physically and mentally wounded beyond recovery are reportedly able to recuperate from their wounds and return to society. Several doctors who were Aurora Society members are employed at the sanatorium.[3]

According to Ada, the patients are able to recover due to treatment involving rigorous hygiene control, rather than a so-called "miracle." She and her team, which is composed of a first unit and a second unit, closely monitor and thoroughly sanitize the sanatorium to ensure that bacteria does not enter and spread. Such procedures include the "elaborate disinfection event," where newly arrived guests are doused in bleach, stripped, and disinfected, so that the germs they carry in from outside the sanatorium are eliminated. The core of the sanatorium is to get rid of bacteria while keeping their patients alive.[4]

Ch173 Courtyard

The courtyard.

In the morning, Ada wakes up the patients and constrains them to gather in the courtyard, where they must perform "healthy, vigorous calisthenics," a series of exercises, prior to eating their meal.[5] At night, she makes rounds to check on the patients.[6]

The sanatorium is fully funded by a "certain research institution" in return for its provision of specimens and blood drawn from the blood-drawing room. Said provision constitutes its contribution to advancement in medicine. The apparatus that draw blood are sometimes referred to as the "technology of immortality."[7] The sanatorium cannot sustain itself on the traditional operating model of solely relying on donations; it requires the institution's funds in order to serve its patients properly and with adequate nursing care, so that its patients can be guided back to society.[8] Young, strong patients are asked to cooperate and have a half pint of their blood drawn on a monthly basis.[9] Recently, the institution has drastically increased the amount of blood required and threatened to stop funding the sanatorium if Ada does not oblige.[10]

Structure[]

Ch172 Ward

The ward.

The Athena Sanatorium was built according to Florence Nightingale's innovative design.[11] The sanatorium is a spacious building margined by a well-manicured lawn and immaculate tiles. Baldroy has noted the modernization and cleanliness of the place.[12]

Ch175 Ada's office

Ada's office.

On the upper floor of the sanatorium is a ward with an abundance of hospital beds for patients to rest and sleep. The ward, lined with large windows to let in clean air and light, contains heating equipment to keep patients warm and a communication system where patients can remotely alert nurses. Baldroy has noted the cleanliness of the ward, as well, commenting that there are no rats or flies.[13] The sanatorium also has a staff dormitory.[14] Ada's office is located downstairs.[15]

The blood-drawing room.

One facility of the sanatorium is the rehabilitation room, where wounded soldiers undergo functional training, with the assistance of Layla, who motivates them via intimidation tactics. Another facility is the operation theatre, where patients who received inappropriate treatment undergo a second operation with the latest technology. The last facility is a cylindrical building separate from the main building; Ada identifies the room upstairs as the blood-drawing room.[16]

Outside the sanatorium is a courtyard, where patients perform calisthenics in the morning.[5]

Ch186 Athena Sanatorium

The area where goods are transported.

In addition, the sanatorium has a warehouse where goods such as bandages and medicines are stored.[17]

History[]

After Ada returned to England from the Sudan campaign, she worked at several sanatoriums and eventually ended up at Karnstein Hospital. There, Ada was headhunted by a doctor who was part of the Aurora Society; he offered to give her the opportunity to fulfill her dream of realizing "a more healthy way of nursing." The Aurora Society would build and fund a sanatorium for her, as long as she agreed to collect blood from her prospective patients for the Society's medical research. Ada agreed, and Athena Sanatorium was created.[18]
