History[]
Artie and Theodore knew each other before they ended up at F.O.L. Orphanage.[3]
Blue Revenge Arc[]
In December 1889, when Finnian and Snake are visiting Collie class, Artie drags back a Collie, Daniel, who escaped from the classroom as he refuses to do "woman's" work. Artie scolds him for his outdated, entitled views that are despised at F.O.L. Orphanage. He also tells Oliver to take better care of his "siblings" as he is the oldest Collie; Oliver apologizes and promises to do better.
Artie then sees Snake and Finnian and apologizes for not noticing them sooner. They introduce themselves to one another, and Snake informs Artie that Doll introduced him and Finnian to the orphanage.
Afterward, the chief arrives and whispers something to Susan who then announces to everyone present that tomorrow will be Ginny's "fledging day." While the other students are ecstatic, Artie and Oliver are shocked and appalled. Oliver even forgets to pay attention to his pot with the boiling orange peels, and Artie has to warn him about it; Oliver hurts himself nevertheless. Artie also wonders how Ginny's "fledging day" could happen "so fast."[4]
Artie then whispers something to Oliver.[5] In the evening, Artie attends Ginny's celebratory dinner,[6] and, at night, he, Mabel, Oliver, and Theodore ambush Finnian when he leaves his room. Mabel, hanging from the ceiling, restrains and silences Finnian with a cloth, and Oliver holds a knife against his throat. Theodore tells Finnian to come with them if he values his life.[7]
The four students bring Finnian to a larder where Theodore questions him. When the students realize that Finnian does not know what is going on at the orphanage, they argue among themselves what to do; Artie thinks they should not work with Finnian because they do not need anyone who is "weaker" than them. Finnian interrupts them and reveals that he and Snake infiltrated the orphanage because their master believes the institution might be connected to an organization that collects blood.[8] Mabel and Oliver are quick to believe him, but Artie is adamant that Finnian is lying because his claims sounds too "outlandish" to him. Theodore is skeptical, but does not dismiss the possibility that he is saying the truth. He and Artie also inform Finnian about the orphanage's tight security and that escapees are quickly caught and immediately reach their "fledging day."
Theodore ultimately decides to help Finnian for as long as he helps them, but warns him that they will turn him in if he acts suspiciously. Telling Finnian to meet them in the larder again tomorrow at midnight, the elder students leave.
The next day, Ginny's "fledging day" ceremony is held. Her hair is cut to her scalp and she receives her "fledging garment." Afterward, Artie and the other elder students watch Ginny leave in a carriage.[9] The chief then announces that the students will now start the lessons for the day as the ceremony is over.[10]
At night, Artie, along with Mabel, Theodore, and Oliver, waits for Finnian in the larder. When he arrives, he and the others lead him to the stables where they watch a carriage arrive. The driver carries an unconscious Ginny into the stable, and Theodore explains Finnian that this happens to every "fledged" child: They are secretly returned to the orphanage and brought to the stable where they "vanish." After the driver has left, they go into the stable and search it for a hidden door. They still have not found anything when Snake catches them and asks what they are doing.[11] Snake followed Finnian because he was behaving suspiciously during the day.
While Finnian explains to Snake that the "fledged" students never leave the orphanage and that they are returned to the stables at night instead, Artie asks Theodore whether they should trust Snake. After all, Snake and Doll are old friends. Theodore tells him to trust and involve him for now, as they have no other choice.
After Snake is enlightened about the situation, he calls all his snakes and sends them to search the building. The students are spooked by the snakes, particularly Oliver but Artie can prevent him from screaming out loud by covering his mouth. Soon, one snake, Jonathan, discovers something, and Artie and the other students hurry to look.[12] Finnian and Snake join them after talking briefly.
The students explain that they searched the stable to which Jonathan had led them but found nothing. When Artie says he does not think that snakes are useful at all, Jonathan frightens a horse to demonstrate that the area beneath the stable is hollow. Indeed, when they inspect the ground, they uncover the entrance to a secret underground facility. There, they do not only find Ginny's fledging garment but Ginny herself, though unresponsive and locked in a jar.
A moment later, the chief, Susan, and another teacher enter the room to inspect the status of the "packing" and determine the next "fledging": Theodore.[13] They continue to discuss what they have been doing and why—the students are separated into classes and trained as they are in the hope of making their "radiance" more suitable to the "stars"—before they leave to bring Canopus her "radiance."
When they are gone, Theodore collapses, terrified to know that he will be next. Artie goes to comfort him and suggests to flee, but Theodore reminds him that the staff will only go after the younger students then. He proposes taking some of the jars containing organs with them to give them to newspapers as proof of the orphanage's misdoings. Everyone agrees and grabs a few jars before Snake and his snakes guide them through the underground passages. On the way to the exit, they stumble over a lit room; inside, they find Doll receiving a blood transfusion from the chief and Susan.[14]
Theodore then exposes Doll as Canopus, one of the "stars," which prompts the chief to pull out a gun and shoot at the students. Finnian can save them and orders them to run.
Artie, Mabel, Theodore, and Oliver hurry into the corridor but Doll jumps over their heads and blocks the way. Snake cannot believe what is happening and when he asks Doll if she is one of the "stars," she apologizes for having lied to him. She adds that she never wanted him to know that she has become a monster and reveals that the Phantomhive household killed her and the other circus members. Doll then asks him to join her to take revenge on the Phantomhives for murdering their family.[15] Finnian confirms he and the rest of the Phantomhive household killed the circus members and explains they only did so because they were kidnapping children and allowing them to be maltreated. They also planned to kill their master Ciel. All these revelations overwhelm Snake.
In the meantime, the chief and Susan recover and join them in the passageway. They attack the students, though they are quickly bested by them. When Theodore boasts that they, the students, were victorious against the teachers because of the "aptitude" they "reared so carefully," Doll scoffs. Saying that they are only "imitations" that can "never surpass the real thing," she lunges to slit Mabel's throat—but Snake rushes to save her, and Doll cuts Snake's throat instead.[16]
Horrified by what she has done, Doll tries to stop the bleeding, in vain. While everyone is distracted, the chief grabs Mabel and is about to shoot her, but Artie is quicker; using Susan's gun, he shoots her in the head. He then orders Oliver to kill Susan. When Oliver hesitates, Susan pleads for her life, offering to lead them out of the secret facility. Artie does not care what she has to say though and shoots her too.
Afterward, Artie searches her body; as he thought, Susan was hiding knives in her hair and sleeves because he could tell with a single glance that she and the chief were murderers. Artie confiscates the knives and tells Theodore to take the chief's gun. He adds that he should not get scared now; they have known each other since before the orphanage after all. Theodore complies and claims the gun. A moment later, he hears footsteps and announces that more staff members are coming. The elder students and Finnian then escape, having no choice but to leave Snake with Doll.[17]
