The Butler, Deceiving (その執事、欺罔, Sono Shitsuji, Gimō) is Chapter 209 of the Kuroshitsuji manga.

Summary[]

Bleeding out in Doll's arms, Snake recalls meeting Ciel and Sebastian for the first time at Noah's Ark Circus and how he always felt that something was "off" about them.

After his snakes noticed Ciel and Sebastian sneaking into tents, Snake informed Joker. However, he did not tell him immediately, and when Joker asked him why he did not, Snake did not answer. Joker brushed it off then and sent him away. Wishing him and the other first-tier circus members good night, Snake left the tent but he remained outside and heard that Joker and the others were wondering if they were "found out" and if Sebastian and Ciel belonged to Scotland Yard. To figure out how to proceed, they decided to talk to "Father," a person Snake does not know because, although the circus members are his "family," they keep certain things from him.

Not long afterward, all first-tier members vanished without a word or trace, sending the rest of the circus into a panic. Because of Snake's strong desire for a "real" family, he eventually left the circus to search for Joker and the others and find out about everything they had hidden from him. His journey brought him to Phantomhive Manor where Ciel told him that the first-tier members had been kidnapping children and that he and Sebastian came to Noah's Ark Circus to investigate and gather evidence. Hearing that, Snake both would not believe it and knew in his heart that it was true. Ciel then offered to take him in so that he could, one day, be "reunited" with the circus members. Snake was unsure whether he could believe Ciel's words but ultimately took his offer in the hope that he was not lying.

At Phantomhive Manor, Snake was taught to live as himself, not as a "spectacle" as he had to before, and learned how to read and write among other things. And even when others were unkind to him, ridiculing him for his strange appearance, Ciel and Sebastian told him not to be ashamed of his looks and to hold himself confidently as he was now an aristocrat's footman. This gave Snake hope that, finally, he could properly be part of a "family" this time. Unfortunately, he learned at F.O.L. Orphanage that everything was a lie after all.

Wondering why the Phantomhive household and the circus even bothered to help him and why they lied to him, Snake dies of extensive hemorrhaging. A Grim Reaper finishes reviewing his Cinematic Record with no "additional remarks."
