The Butler, A Brief Respite is Chapter 190 of the Kuroshitsuji manga.
Summary[]
Baldroy dreams of warm, fluffy bread and wonders if he is in Heaven. The bread transforms into a familiar silhouette which he believes to belong to God—it is only Nicholas though who yells at him, asking who God is and saying that he has not gone to Heaven yet. This wakes up Baldroy who is quite surprised to find himself in the blood-drawing room.
Lau is amused by the fact that Baldroy who has killed in wars thought he would have gone to Heaven; he comments how shameless Western people are before he welcomes Baldroy back to "Hell." Baldroy sees the tubes on Lau's arm and his attention then shifts on the blood-transfusion machine next to him; he asks what it is. Ada tells him that he nearly died of arterial bleeding and sullied his clothes and sanatorium floor. To save him, she asked for volunteers to donate their blood to him. Lau notes how interesting it is that, despite the differences between orientals and occidentals, their blood is still the same; because he has Canopus blood like Baldroy, he could save him.
Baldroy is quite glad to realize that he has survived yet again. Conny reminds him that he told him that he would definitely recover because of the Miracle Healer. Baldroy replies that he is right before he muses how ironic it is that the technology of Ciel's enemies saved him.
Then, Conny and Nicholas say that they did not know their blood was used that way, and they are happy they could help others like that. Especially Nicholas is joyous to find that out because he did not think he could still help someone despite his advanced age. Ada reiterates that the blood-transfusion machine can save people who could not have been saved before. However, Athena Sanatorium still has to be closed immediately. Nicholas, Conny, and the other patients protest at her announcement, saying that they have not recovered yet and would not find a job in their state or at their age. Hearing this, Ada says she does not have the heart to close the sanatorium if there are still people in need. She wants to stay here until she finds another facility, but Baldroy reminds her that the organization will kill her as soon as possible when they find out what happened here. He suggests her to hide.
Lau then suggests to move the facility and everyone in it to Shanghai. He says he was skeptical at first about the Miracle Healer and the "technology of immortality" but now that he has witnessed it first-hand because of Baldroy's softheartedness, he is moved by it. He calls the machine a "dragon's egg" and notes China would surely welcome them with it. He also thinks he can make a lot of profit from the technology and "easy to handle" subjects if he can make them his. Lau proceeds to say that Ada would not be murdered, the patients would not be left as beggars in the streets, the organization would not bother to hunt them all the way to Shanghai, and he would get all the credit. The arrangement would benefit everyone, and Lau is glad to have decided to help Ciel and come to Wiltshire. Ada accepts and thanks "Doctor Chang" before she bursts into tears.
Baldroy looks up at the sky and promises to learn how to make pie by the time he meets his wife and child again. The sun rises in the horizon, and he asks them to wait a little longer for him.
Somewhere in the forest, Layla trips and becomes upset at Al because he has not come to help her despite his promise not to leave her alone. Ronald apologizes for keeping her waiting, helps her up, and tells her that he has finally found her.
