The Butler, Questioning is Chapter 182 of the Kuroshitsuji manga.
Summary[]
Baldroy inquires whether they really have to clean up everything by morning, and Sebastian tells him that they cannot allow their master to walk on soiled ground. Then, Baldroy goes to pick up the flour from the ground and says that he will return it to the kitchen if it is all right. Sebastian cannot believe that Baldroy is contemplating to serve Ciel food that fell on the floor, a bloodied floor no less, but Baldroy insists that, at least, the wheat that does not have any blood on it is still fine to eat. He complains about the waste; after all, farmers work very hard to make even a handful of wheat.
Hearing this, Sebastian remembers that Baldroy once said he had taken care of cows and asks if he has experience with livestock and produce. Baldroy replies that he comes from a family of farmers and never thought he would make a living killing people one day. He then tells Sebastian his life story:
Baldroy was born during a gold rush boom. At that time, people were very taken with the frontier spirit, and children wished to be a gunfighter or a sheriff. Everyone had ambitions, but Baldroy was content with being a farmer. His ancestors came to America in search of freedom of religion; ever since, his family consisted of farmers. Because natives helped his ancestors by giving them corn and beans when they arrived in America and did not know what to do, his family kept in mind never to forget their gratitude toward the natives.
Eventually, Baldroy married a rancher named Joanna who would sometimes come to his farm to exchange milk for wheat. She would often ask for too much in exchange then though because she claimed that her family's milk was sweeter and more nutritious than anyone else's milk. Thus, three gallons of milk for one twenty-four pound bag of wheat seemed fine for her, but not for Baldroy who was reluctant to give her more than a fifteen-pound-bag.
They had a son, Baldroy Jr., and Baldroy envisioned himself living a quiet, ordinary farmer's life like his ancestors. Only, one day, they were attacked by natives.
