The Butler, Recuperation is Chapter 173 of the Kuroshitsuji manga.
Summary[]
In the evening, while Baldroy unpacks his suitcase, he thinks about his mission and wonders why Lau has bothered to accompany him. Before he can dwell on this train of thoughts, Baldroy's attention is diverted by two of his roommates who want to get to know the person who is using their old roommate Ethan's bed next. The older one of the two, Nicholas, asks Baldroy in which war he fought—if it was the Great Rebellion in India or the Crimean War. The younger one is quick to remind him that those wars happened thirty years ago, and Baldroy notes that, back then, he was still chastized by his tutor and adds that he went to North Africa. The younger roommate says that he must have been in Sudan then and that they may have passed each other there. He remarks that it was a terrible war before proceeding to lift his blanket to show Baldroy his missing leg. Afterward, he introduces himself as Conny, and Baldroy tells him his name is "Matthew Burgh."
Conny inquires what brought Baldroy to the sanatorium, and Baldroy replies that, while he sustained no lasting physical injuries on the battlefield, his experiences there would not leave him: He would constantly have flashbacks to the war, and this eventually led to his wife and son leaving him. Nicholas is saddened by Baldroy's story, and Conny reassures him that Ada will definitely be able to help him. After all, she could help Ethan who used to be in terrible condition. Now, he makes deliveries at a liquor store. Laughing, Baldroy says that he hopes Ethan will come to the sanatorium too then.
Later at night when everyone is fast asleep, Baldroy gets up to investigate. However, as soon as he opens the door, he is spotted by Ada who is making her night rounds to make sure everyone is doing well despite the nightly temperature drops. She wants to know what Baldroy is doing—after all, he has to sleep to be able to recover well. Baldroy lies that he was on the way to the bathroom, and Ada offers to take him there as he needs light to go there.
The next morning, Ada wakes up everyone with a trumpet and orders them to gather in the courtyard. There, they do "healthy, vigorous calisthenics" where they have to move their arms and legs up and down in the "Phoenix" pose. When they are done, Ada tells Baldroy that, after breakfast, she will show him around the facilities.
Lau and Ronald join their tour, and Ada guides them first to the Rehabilitation Room where wounded patients undergo functional training. They meet Layla there who is sitting on a patient's back and "encourages" him to keep crawling on all fours. Then, they head to the Operating Theatre where patients who received insufficent or inappropriate care on the battlefield get a second follow-up operation using the latest technology. Baldroy suspects that they may be drawing the soldiers' blood here.
Afterward, Ada and Ronald lead Baldroy and Lau outside to a small separate building where the last facility is—the Blood Drawing Room.
